Cleanliness, and also the health of the World Ocean are inextricably linked with our lives. An active reduction in the populations of organisms living in it, mutations of existing ones, the extinction of not only fauna, but also flora, have a negative impact on the planet as a whole. This leads to a change in entire ecosystems, collapsing food chains are reflected in a decrease in human income, and also in food obtained from the expanses of water.
More than 40% of the World Ocean is now classified as areas heavily affected by human impact and activities, including pollution, depletion of fish and shellfish stocks, loss of coastal habitats. Every year, more than 8 million tons of waste enters the oceans, among which plastic is the most harmful. Every year, it is the cause of the death of most sea creatures, the list of which reaches millions of individuals. More than 700 species have already been affected by plastic, some of which are currently classified as endangered.
Scientists predict that by 2050 the amount of plastic in the waters will exceed the total number of fish living there. Plastic has a long lifespan and real islands in the oceans are “built” from it: one of the largest is in the Pacific Ocean, and its area is a record 1.6 million square kilometers, which is three times the size of France.
The green island of Bali is still not polluted, but the areas where tourists actively come are gradually littered with plastic and changing their natural color. According to statistics, more than 15,000 cubic meters of garbage are located in landfills and roadsides. Waste, drifting on the water, comes from all over the world, especially from Indonesia. This is due to the lack of special equipment for recycling on the islands themselves, as a result of which most of the plastic (more than 200,000 tons annually) is dumped into the ocean, from where it drifts to the best beaches in Bali. According to scientists, the Indonesian archipelago now “supplies” up to 10% of all plastic waste into the ocean.
